Researches at Oxford University have compiled a list of the most irritating phrases used. Many of these are irritating because they are overused ore used in the wrong context.
The top ten most irritating phrases:
1 – At the end of the day
2 – Fairly unique
3 – I personally
4 – At this moment in time
5 – With all due respect
6 – Absolutely
7 – It’s a nightmare
8 – Shouldn’t of
9 – 24/7
10 – It’s not rocket science
One phrase that I think should be on there is “it is what it is.” That phrase is used too much. What phrase irritates you? What phrase do you overuse?
anything over 100% to describe someones efforts. 100% is perfectly, all the time… you can’t do anything 110% of the time or 110% effort…
It is what it is, is a salesman phrase. I try not to say it, but I learned it selling cars and have had permanently placed into my vocabulary.
I personally like “It’s not rocket surgery.” You’ll get corrected occassionally, just shake your head.
In my game folks (including me) say “It’s easy to show” just before we display the results of a complicated derivation.
#8 is irritating to me because it should be “Shouldn’t have”.
I also am irritated when people say “literally”, but what they’re refering to didn’t actually literally happen.
I am also irritated when people use quotes from the Bible out of context.

If that is the case then you should have, move on. It irritates me 110% of the time, absolutely, 24/7!
I would go with “whickity whack.” Like that show is ‘whickity whack.'” It’s even more annoying when people say it like they’re scratching a turn table. Like “That show is whickity whack-whack-whack.” I think you need to read that last sentence out loud to get the full sense of annoyance.
I’m going to go with “Boo yeah”. I’m not sure why. Sorry Lindsey and Carlyn.
I hate the word “shenanigans”… it’s spreading around work, and it’s basically the most annoying word ever now.
Also, when people say “ATM machine”….. really???? Automated teller machine machine??? C’mon people…
One of mine is, “well to tell you the truth”. Does that mean that you dont normally tell me the truth unless you say that.
when my brother says…..”and this is what i like to call the same thing happens everytime…..”…..that gets very annoying!!!!!
My Aunt knew somebody who always said “and everythign else like that” after everything she said. For example, she would say, “So we went over to my parents’ house for dinner and everything else like that. We ate meatloaf for dinner and everything else like that. I think we stayed over there for about 2 hours and everything else like that.” No kidding, it was her thing, but it was super annoying!
I totallt agree with dp! I hate when people talk about giving it 150%! It is dumb. Makes no sense.
My pick for most annoying saying is, “Know what I mean?” People say that WAY too much at the end of their statements.
In regards to my over 100% annoyance, watching American Idol yesterday Randy Jackson(one of the judges if you live in a cave and don’t know) says a million percent yes all the time… jeez.
